Flash Focus: Bank Negara Indonesia (BBNI IJ/Not rated) - Loans Racing Ahead, but Margin and Asset Quality Cap Earnings
BBNI posted 3Q26 net profit of IDR5.4tr (+5.2% QoQ, +6.8% YoY), bringing 9M26 earnings to IDR16.1tr (+6.6% YoY). The QoQ growth came from provisions, which dropped 36.8% QoQ to IDR1.9tr (3Q26 CoC: 0.7% vs. 1.2% in 2Q26). Core operations softened, however. NII fell 2.7% QoQ to IDR11.0tr, as interest expense jumped 24.5% QoQ against only 8.9% QoQ growth in interest income, while opex rose 7.4% QoQ, pushing PPOP down 1.5% QoQ to IDR9.0tr. Loans grew 22.2% YoY (+2.5% QoQ; +10.3% YTD) to IDR992.5tr, funded by TPF growth of 20.4% YoY (CASA ratio 65.2%).

3Q26 NIM fell to 3.3% from 3.6% in 2Q26 (9M26: 3.5% vs. 3.8% in 9M25), as CoF jumped 53bps QoQ to 3.16%, with time deposit cost at 5.39% amid tight liquidity. Management noted that BBNI's compression is also yield-driven (9M26 loan yield: 6.9% vs. 7.3%), reflecting a mix shift towards lower-yielding wholesale loans. Repricing (79bps, above target) lifted QTD loan yield to 7.1% from 6.9%, but was not enough to offset the funding cost spike. Headline asset quality improved, with LaR down to 7.8% from 10.4% a year earlier and NPL flat at 1.9%. However, consumer NPL rose to 3.2% from 2.6% on softer purchasing power, while commercial NPL climbed to 5.9% from 4.9%.
Management raised FY26F loan-growth guidance to 10–13% from 8–10%, citing its ability to maintain funding, coverage and capital, and expects low-to-mid-teens growth in FY27F. With loans already up 10.3% YTD, the upper end implies c.2.4% QoQ growth in 4Q26F. It kept NIM guidance at 3.3–3.5% and CoC guidance at 1.0–1.2%, the latter implying a step-up from 3Q26's 0.7%. Management expects 4Q26F NIM to improve from 3Q26, although further repricing scope is limited, with 20% of loans at fixed rates and 50% at managed rates. CET1 stood at 16.5% vs. a 14.5% minimum appetite, and dividends are expected to normalize. Medium-term CIR is targeted at around 40% (9M26: 45.8%).
We hold a neutral view on BBNI. Loan growth has been strong and should stay robust, supported by wholesale demand, a solid CASA franchise and adequate provisioning amid lower NPL formation (9M26: 1.3%). However, 22% loan growth translated into only 6.6% earnings growth in 9M26. We see further NIM compression risk given limited repricing room, elevated funding costs and a growing share of low-yielding wholesale loans. Weaker consumer and commercial asset quality suggests credit cost should normalize from 3Q26's 0.7%, while CET1 of 16.5% leaves only ~200bps of headroom over the 14.5% appetite to fund both growth and dividends. Together, potential NIM compression and weaker asset quality may limit BBNI's earnings growth.
